Top Five Car "Neglects"

Recently, AAA has conducted thousands of vehicle inspections and automotive experts estimate as a nation we are wasting thousands of gallons of gas, compromising our safety, and sending our cars to an early grave.

Read on to learn the tips most Car Repair Shops don't want you to know...

  1. Tire Pressure

  2. Over-inflated tires ride roughly and suffer premature tread wear in the center of the tire. Under-inflated tires decrease fuel economy.

Tires typically lose about a pound of pressure per month through normal seepage. Tires also lose or gain another pound of inflation with every 10-degree change in outdoor temperature.

Conclusion: Check your tires at least once a month before driving.

  3. Engine Air Filter

  4. A dirty or clogged air filter restricts airflow and will reduce engine performance and fuel economy.

For your convenience we have included a "how-to" video so you can change your air filter without going to an expensive car repair shop.

  5. Tire Tread

  6. Improper tire tread decreases traction and control on the roadways, putting you and your loved ones at risk.

Conclusion: Tire tread should be a minimum of 3/32". You can check your tire tread using a penny. Place the penny in your tire's tread and channels. Insert it so that Abraham Lincoln's head is downwards. If you can see all of Lincoln's face then it is time to get new tires.

If it hides or obscures part of his face you are most likely ok. Remember: When in doubt, get it checked out!

  7. Engine Oil

  8. Oil is your engine's lifeblood. Without a clean, adequate supply, your engine will weare more rapidly and even seize up. Lighter grade oils reduce the load your car's battery and starter, allowing more rapid cranking and starting.

Conclusion: Change your engine's oil and filter together at specified intervals. Also, use the weight of oil recommended by the car manufacturer for existing temperature conditions.

  9. Windshield Wipers

  10. Last but not least it's clear to see why a good set of windshield wipers is so important. Temperature extremes (like here in Idaho) can cause premature failure resulting in streaking on your windshield.

Conclusion: They're right in front of you, so it's easy to see when they're not working.
